It wasn’t until 2001 that the first official Star Wars Day celebration of May 4th took place, with festivities including a costume contest and a movie marathon. Since then, Star Wars Day has gained popularity and is now celebrated by Star War Fans worldwide.  There are many Star Wars themed events organized in different parts of the world; even Disney is hosting a 4 day event this year!  Many fans will host their own costume and viewing parties with Star Wars themed treat recipes available online.

The movie Star Wars was originally released in 1977 and soon became an international phenomenon and cult classic.  Nothing illustrates this more clearly than the fact that when Margaret Thatcher was elected Prime Minister of Great Britain on May 4, 1979, the conservative party took a half page add in the London Evening Time proclaiming:

“May the 4th be with you Maggie, Congratulations”

In the 40 years since the movie was originally released, it has earned over $2.5 billion, spawned the most successful movie franchise of all time and changed the way movies are made.  It began the era of special-effect-packed movies and kick started much of the movie making technologies we take for granted nowadays.  Star Wars was a seismic cultural phenomenon whose aftershocks are still being felt today.
