Ground Water
Fresh water is one of the planets most critical resources essential to all land based life
It is also one of the planets most rapidly diminishing resources.
Conservation and protection of existing supplies and the rehabilitation of degraded sources are one of the most urgent problems facing humanity today.
A groundwater management plan will require knowledge of the extent, the geography, the geology and capacity of the aquifer, what goes in and what comes out.
The Heron Instruments dipperLog Groundwater Monitoring System is the choice of
Professionals when they are required to monitor and record water levels and temperatures in wells, boreholes and open bodies of water over long periods.
For short term monitoring projects the Heron range of portable groundwater level indicators like the dipper-T and Water Tape for intermittent measurement of static groundwater levels are the ideal solution.
Source, location, consumption and recharge are the major parameters of any water management scheme. Groundwater or sub surface aquifers form one of the largest and most widely distributed fresh water sources on the planet. The ground water aquifers were formed over many thousands of years by surface percolation of rainwater and melt water from various ice ages. A wet summer or two will not result in any significant recharge of these aquifers.
Monitoring an aquifer requires constant measurements of the fall and rise of the groundwater levels over long periods of time and many seasons of rain fall and cycles of consumption.
These measurements are made at the sites of purpose built observation wells or productive wells sunk into the aquifer. The measurements can be made by a permanently installed data logger like the Heron dipperLog groundwater data logger or by taking regular static water level measurements by a hand held meter like the Heron dipper-T or Water Tape at convenient intervals.
For data density the
dipperLog are the preferred method. Although static water level measurement may appear less costly initially, over the long term the investment will more than justify itself in terms of the huge amount of data that can be used in groundwater aquifer models that may be used with a high confidence level.
Heron Instruments also makes a range of portable groundwater level indicators suitable for measuring the peizometric level in standpipes and Casagrande piezometers.
